So it’s been almost 2 years since I last blogged about being unemployed and engaging in a job search. That’s because it’s been that long ago that my search ended and I became gainfully employed again. Until last Friday, that is. Yes – my job was eliminated. Who would think an office of four would downsize?! Friday, July 13th was my last day. (Do you see the irony in that?) But this time there won’t be any 20+ month search. You see I’ve already landed a position! I start there Monday, July 23rd.
I’m thinking it must be true what they say – it’s easier to find a job when you already have one. But they don’t say you’ll find a job that pays as well as the one you have. Yes – I am taking a pay cut. And even though it won’t be easy since I’m going to be paying for a wedding (yikes!), I think the timing of this happened for a reason. I just saw a movie called The Most Exotic Marigold Hotel and there was a line in the movie that went something like this:
“Life usually never goes like we planned, so we have to do something else. And in the end the ‘something else’ turns out to be better.”
I love that. I’ve had some goals that I’ve been putting off, but I think this time the message is coming across loud and clear. It’s time for me to start “something else”.
Of course, I will be working full-time at my new job too. And I could come up with a million excuses as to why I shouldn’t do this now. Excuses like “I’m too busy”. Will I be busy since I will have a 30 hour a week job and will be trying to establish my presence and brand in my “spare” hours? Probably! What about “I have to sleep”. Will I miss a few hours of sleep? It’s likely! Sleep is overrated anyway. And there’s “I don’t know if this will work out o.k.”
But I DO know this – I will I bring my same determination and drive to this new adventure. Every successful activity takes time, commitment and determination, right? Remember my last job search?
