Dynamic Duo of Encouragement

Do you what discouragement feels like?  I do.  I also know what it feels like when someone encourages me.  It doesn’t matter how inconsequential the word or action may seem to the giver, just knowing that someone has taken the time to reach out gives me great encouragement,  and profoundly affects the rest of my day.

So what does that tell me?  It tells me that I can be an encourager to the discouraged.

Whether it be family members, friends, co-workers, or maybe even someone you don’t know that well, your encouragement can have a huge impact. Can I share some ways we can encourage those around us?

It’s not profound.  It boils down to:  words and actions.

Words let them know you are thinking of them.  Your words can encourage by  praising them for a job well done, and by offering practical and specific ways you can help them.

Actions that encourage include writing a note to cheer them up, writing letters of appreciation and commendation, celebrating large and small victories in their lives, and maybe most importantly of all, just listening.  And make sure you always let others know when they have encouraged you!  It’s amazing how encouraging it is to hear someone say “you really encouraged me when you……”.

I know there are many other ways to encourage besides the ones I’ve mentioned.  What do you do to encourage others?  How have you been encouraged?  Please feel free to share in the comments.
